Why Missions? Before He ascended back to heaven, the Lord Jesus left the disciples a pretty clear command in Matthew 28:18-20. After encouraging them that “ALL” authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him, the Lord then instructed His followers to “GO” and make disciples of “ALL” the nations, baptizing and teaching them to obey “ALL” His commands. The King of Kings then issued a very loving promise to those who would live in obedience to this mission. He said, “Be sure of this”, which means to take it to heart and count on it, “I am with you ALWAYS, even to the end of the age.” John Piper has called verse 20, the sweetest promise in the Bible. Not only does Jesus say He is with us throughout our entire journey, He assures us that He is with us “ALWAYS”, right here right now! There is no greater promise for the followers of Jesus who obey His command to live on mission!
At OBC, we believe that every follower of Jesus is a missionary. We also believe that every square inch of the earth is a mission field. Some of us will take the gospel to the nations and some of us will remain and carry out the mission here while supporting the Lord’s work across the globe. Wherever the Lord calls you, GO!
Our mission’s strategy at OBC is to GO – Locally, Nationally, and Globally, from Eden to the nations!
Local: God has sovereignly placed you where you live, work, shop, and serve. Individually, this is your mission field and we want to help you utilize your gifts, talents, and resources to serve your neighbors well. As a church, local missions means serving Eden and surrounding towns, cities, and counties. We are partnering with organizations and ministries to help us make an impact in our community. In addition we are starting ministries that will help us do the same.
National: We want to get involved in as many states as possible to share the love of Jesus. This means supporting church plants like the one (soon to be two) in Utah. It also means serving inner city missions like Agape House in Baltimore or the Stowe Center in Cleveland. One thing you can count on in a fallen world is disaster. This gives us opportunity to provide relief and encouragement to those across the country affected by disaster through ministries like NC Baptist on Mission, Samaritan’s Purse, or our own OBC response.
Global: We want to cultivate a heart for missions in every ministry area at OBC. We believe the Lord will bless this effort by calling people from our congregation that we can bless and send out to serve as full-time missionaries somewhere in the world. Currently we support and assist missions efforts in Africa, India, Asia, and Central America. We want to partner with many more like-minded ministries around the world to advance the Kingdom!
