Why Missions?

Before He ascended back to heaven, the Lord Jesus left the disciples a pretty clear command in Matthew 28:18-20. After encouraging them that ALL authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him, the Lord then instructed His followers to GO and make disciples of ALL the nations, baptizing and teaching them to obey ALL His commands. The King of Kings then issued a very loving promise to those who would live in obedience to this mission. He said, “Be sure of this”, which means to take it to heart and count on it, “I am with you ALWAYS, even to the end of the age.” John Piper has called verse 20 the sweetest promise in the Bible. Not only does Jesus say He is with us throughout our entire journey, He assures us that He is with us ALWAYS, right here right now! There is no greater promise for the followers of Jesus who obey His command to live on mission!

At OBC, we believe that every follower of Jesus is a missionary. We also believe that every square inch of the earth is a mission field. Some of us will take the gospel to the nations and some of us will remain and carry out the mission here while supporting the Lord’s work across the globe. Wherever the Lord calls you, GO!

Our mission’s strategy at OBC is to GO-
Locally, Nationally, and Globally, from Eden to the nations!

Local

God has sovereignly placed you where you live, work, shop, and have fun. Individually, this is your mission field and we want to help you utilize your gifts, talents, and resources to serve your neighbors well. As a church, local missions means serving Eden and surrounding towns, cities, and counties. We are partnering with effective, like-minded ministry organizations, as well as starting new ministries, to help us impact in our community by sharing God’s love through meeting needs.

National

We want to get involved in as many states as possible to share the love of Jesus throughout our beautiful nation. This means supporting church plants like the two we have in Utah, or serving inner city missions like we do in Baltimore and Columbus, Ohio, and working with local churches to reach their communities like LifeSigns Deaf Baptist Church in New Albany, Ohio. One thing you can be certain of in a fallen world is disaster. This gives us opportunity to provide much needed relief and encouragement across the country to those affected by natural disasters through ministries like NC Baptists on Mission or even our own OBC response. It’s a privilege to bring the Lord’s light and hope into these difficult places.

Global

We want to cultivate a heart for missions in every ministry area at OBC. We believe the Lord will bless this effort by calling people from our congregation who we can equip, bless, and send out to serve as full-time missionaries somewhere in the world. Currently we support and assist missions efforts in North, South, and East Africa; South and East Asia; and throughout Central America and the Caribbean. As the Lord leads, we want to partner with additional like-minded ministries around the world, by financially giving and going to advance the Kingdom of God by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
